Do you remember how fluidly you moved when you were a child? There was no movement that was impossible for you to do and no posture that you couldn't get into. As human beings, we are born to move.

Then why do many of us lose our ability to move in the same way as we grow up? In many cases, we have simply "forgotten" how to perform such fluid movements as demands of life have taken over. We encounter accidents, suffer injuries, face trauma, and experience stress. To meet specific demands imposed by such situations, the brain develops and uses compensatory movement patterns. These learned patterns
become habitual and continue to exist subtly even after the condition is long healed. This means our movement habits use some muscles more than others. The end result of all this is stiffness and pain. The good news, however, is that these learned patterns can be changed and new balanced movement patterns can be re-learned in their place.

Clinical Somatics is a discipline of movement education that teaches efficient and elegant movements by reducing stiffness, aches and pains. Somatic education takes place in the brain by creating new neural pathways of healthy movements.

I highly recommend reading Dr Thomas Hanna's book Somatics: Reawakening the Mind’s Control of Movement, Flexibility and Health which is available on Amazon.
