Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

Sunday, May 12 2013
4:00 - 5:30 pm

When movements are painful, they are remembered in the brain as “not a good feeling” and are avoided as much as possible. Every time the pain response gets triggered, the body tightens and braces itself for that pain. When movements do not trigger pain, they are remembered as a “good feeling” and are happily performed again and again.

Somatics exercises can start with thought exercises, as just thinking about what needs to happen to create that small movement creates a feeling for that movement. This helps to create a safe environment towards the movement. This class will start moving very slowly and within range of motion re-learning kinesiological movement patterns.

Wear clothing which allows movement.  Jeans, skirts and shorts are not advised for the Somatics classes.

Brain Plasticity for Movements
                  by Anagha Agte

Anagha Agte, Certified Clinical Somatic Educator is looking forward to celebrate Brain Awareness Week (March 11-17) at Wellspring Wellness meet up. The topic of discussion is “Brain Plasticity for Movements.” During this talk, we will discuss:

  • How the brain and muscles work together to create a movement
  • Learn the areas of brain tissue associated with movement of different body parts
  • Understand why Somatic movements retrain the brain, increase flexibility and reduce pain

Young kids can move in any imaginable way, as if they are born to move. As life takes over grownups start experiencing stiffness and pain. The stiffness and pain can be result of an accident, injury, trauma, aging or stress. But they are learned behaviors to cope with the life events. Current neuro-science tells us that the brain is plastic and anything that is learned can be unlearned. Somatic movements unlearn stiffness and pain by harnessing the power of brain plasticity.
